Break the cauldrons, sink the boats.

破釜沉舟 translates to 'break the pots, sink the boats'. The phrase originates in 207 BC, when military general Xiang Yu sent his 20,000-strong army across the river on boats to attack Qin forces at 300,000 soldiers. After crossing the river, Xiang Yu ordered his men to sink their boats and destroy the cooking pots, keeping only three days worth of rations. They were to either prevail against overwhelming odds, or perish, with no hopes of retreat. Despite being heavily outnumbered, Xiang Yu's army won a decisive victory.

What this chengyu describes is not courage, but the deliberate destruction of one's own options, where the only favourable outcome is to succeed overwhelmingly—to move forward with Plan A, with no Plan B.

Product Features

3D Effect

Extra thick acrylic gives each print layer real depth, so the lion and the four-word idiom appears to float in front of the drifting sands, appearing almost 3D.

Quicksand Element

Tilt it and watch the glitter sand drift around the lion, like a tiny hourglass, settling into a new pattern every time. Calming and satisfying, giving you a moment to breathe.

Buddha Knot & Tassel

The first of 65 auspicious symbols of the Buddha, the swastika knot in Buddhism symbolises universal harmony, prosperity, and long life.
